UNIT 12 - "PERIPHERAL" RESEARCH PROJECT
1 day - We are told about the project, about the word "peripheral" and we are told to search the word and look for its several meanings and uses.
PERIPHERAL MEANING :
The word "peripheral" is most of the times used as an adjective, which is used to refer to something situated on the edge, periphery or outskirts of anything. It could be a house, a computer, a city...
As this word is used so much it has many synonyms, and here are some of them :
- Outlying
- Fringe
- Border
- Surroundings
This word has a second meaning which is "marginal" , but it doesn't have such importance as the first meaning. This second meaning is like this because it is usually used to refer to the suburbs of a city as a bad, sad and marginal place to live.
This are some synonyms for this second meaning "marginal" :
- Secondary
- Subsidiary
- Incidental
- Border-line
- Superficial
The word peripheral has even a third meaning. It can also be used as a noun when referring to a peripheral device such as printers, hard-drives, speakers, keyboards...
A peripheral device is something that needs to be attached to a computer to work, or to be usable. This devices can not be an integral part of the computer.
Here, I found some of the most known peripheral devices, and some which I think I will include in the project :

- Keyboard
- Mouse - Webcam - Headphones - Speakers - Projector - Pen-drive |
- Joystick
- Printer - Scaner - Port adapter - Hard-drive - Microphone - GPS |
After researching all this, I draw from my memory some examples of peripheral devices as speakers and headphones. I think it is quite good taking into account I didn't copy or didn't have any model.
As I have drawn all this music devices with a pencil drawing fine and soft lines, I had to edit the photo so it looks darker and you can appreciate better all the details. With this drawings I discovered I have such a good memory for object details. |
2 day - I needed to find ways to start the project and give myself ideas to develop it, so I started thinking about it.
The first idea I have about taking ideas is to write examples of peripheral things or places to me. I think it is a good idea because it is the closest peripheral things to me, and are good themes to expand on the project and develop it.
This are some of my peripheral examples :
This are some of my peripheral examples :
- Instagram
- College - Music - Weather - Technology |
- Sale
- Rugby - Clothing - Photography - Politics |
Looking at this and looking at Sale, I started thinking of developing my project about the suburbs (which is the peripheral of the cities) and the fonts, or calligraphic influence over them, such as street signs and commerce titles, but while searching information about them I noticed how many problems I would have if I continued with this theme, so I changed a bit my direction.
First of all, I the main reason why I changed my direction in the project is because of the none differences between calligraphy between suburbs. As there are no changes between fonts from one suburb to another, it wasn't logical to continue with this because it wasn´t worth to work on that. The most logical step would be to look for the differences between the cities, or even the countries between them, but I would have lost the "peripheral" meaning.

After seeing lots of street signs around the world, and thinking about the lettering styles, I dawned on me that the most characteristic lettering of the suburbs, is the graffiti, so I decided to make a study between the graffiti styles between suburbs in New York as it is where graffiti started.
But I still didn't like much the idea, mainly because of the non-primary research I was going to be able to take. But also because I wasn't going to be able to expand the project as much as I wanted (which is very big).
Last project wasn't at all as I would have liked, I got lazy and I didn't work very hard so I will make this one a huge project, and this theme wouldn't get me very far so I needed to take more ideas, and I thought about this detail.
Below, there are many schemes and ideas I had to think about interesting themes and then chose one of them.

Below, there are many schemes and ideas I had to think about interesting themes and then chose one of them.
A famous professor in Madrid, says there are different types of peripheries :
- 1- The near periphery : this periphery is a very closed area, it could embrace everything in the bedroom such as . music, furniture, books...
- 2- The medium periphery : this periphery is much bigger, it could for example embrace the whole town, some . examples could be the pub, the library...
- 3- The far periphery : This periphery could embrace the whole country or Europe, it is the biggest periphery so . it embraces everything such as traditions, food, costumes...
3 day - Today I need to finally chose the theme for my project.
Unless I have been all night thinking about the themes I could chose, and the near, medium and far peripheries, I still haven't decided yet.
We are told to make a map, an unusual map, a "Map of my life".
Originally, this idea comes from the English artist Grayson Perry and his famous self-portrait called "Map of Days". This map shows the path of his life as a metaphor, using examples of an Eastern-European city to refer to subjective things such as the main square as his brain, crops as tradition, and the river as imagination.
From this, I decide to change the "Map of my life" for "Map of my creative life".

I think this is a very good idea. It can´t be more graphical and it is easy to understand, even what is the periphery of your life, or what your dreams are. Here are some fast sketches of what I think it could describe my life.
Here is the finished map of my creative life. I think it works and explains really well my creative life without explaining the details of what does each part of the map means.
There is a main river which goes all around the city, separating the centre (important things) from the periphery (peripheral things). This river is the creativity, which has always been present in every phase of my life, so it is irrigating each of the zones.
The madrid part is is just houses and skyscrapers as I lived in the center for my first 12 years. As I lived there for so long it needed to be included because I had lots of experiences and influences. There is were I started the World of Atalanta and where I draw most of the characters.
As I was in the center, there are many museums apart from El Prado and I went every weekend to one different museum.
There is a part for dreams and ideas. My drawings have always been dreams such as Atalanta. I have always dreamed so much so I represented it as an antenna receipting all type of ideas from everywhere. It is also represented with solar panels which give me energy to continue working everyday.
You will see a part called Alsasua. That was my house for 4 years. This house was of my grandparents and when we went there, which was literally like a palace, I spent my whole days in the garden doing activities. That is the reason why it is all represented with walls around the house.
I didn't went out, just sports and activities, this house gave me lots of opportunities. Here is where my creativity totally exploded. I started with photography, developing my Atalanta world, and making lots of designs for mobile cases, clothes and mugs.
Sports have helped me so much so much in my creative aspect and have represented so much in my life that I needed to have a space for it. I have spent so much time in my life doing sports that I could say my life is sports and the rest, haha. I have made most of my friends doing sports and here in England, rugby has helped me so much to adapt.
Athletics, basketball, rugby and parkour are the sports I have practiced the most so I've represented them as some pitches and courts.
There is another part in the center of my map and it is family. I must say I have a huge family, composed of 10 uncles and 32 cousins which are always meeting and doing activities. I have put them onto the map because they have all helped me so much with my creativity. They have commissioned me many projects being paid, and that helped to give me desire, continue and think Arts and design was a good path to study.
Finally, England is being another explosion for my artistic progress. I have put England instead of Manchester because I am travelling many weekends to London, Birmingham, Liverpool or Nottingham and this helps me taking ideas, concepts and knowing many artists from many places.

After this I still got nothing from it and tried with something totally realistic in terms of "peripheral" for a life.
It is an imaginary plan and it consists in taking just the totally needful devices and objects from life, so when you start picking objects for entertainment or distraction, then it is peripheral. Imagine you are thrown out of your country onto a totally desserted island and you can only take a few things. I chose 13 items but I think away from the the tenth item are peripheral items. 1 st Item - WATER PURIFICATION 2 nd Item - FOOD 3 rd Item - CLOTHING 4 th Item - LIGHTER 5 th Item - DOG 6 th Item - HAMUCK 7 th Item - TOOLS 8 th Item - GUN 9 th Item - TORCH 10 th Item - FLARE GUN 11 th Item - BUILDING MATERIALS 12 th Item - IPOD 13 th Item - BALL |
After thinking about each object, I started thinking, I have chosen clothing because it protects you from cold, wind or rain, but I wouldn't if it is a tuxedo, or even a jeans.
In my opinion, cloths are totally necessary objects to wear everyday, but when they transform into fashion, just a merely physical appearance look, they convert into peripheral objects.
I think this is a very good theme to chose and expand on because it is a huge theme, because there is lots of primary research everywhere, and because is something which is not concrete. Maybe in two years the clothes we are wearing are very old fashioned, and that is also very interesting.

4 day - Today I need to research and take primary research.
While I was doing research on this, I realised it wold take me a lot of time to look everything, think about it, write it... so at the end of the day I didn't take primary research.

CLOTHING
Clothing is a word used to refer to all type of outfit worn to protect people from cold, the sun, rain, wind, mud... There are loads more of examples about completely functional clothing, and here are some examples :
Doctor's suit : Doctor´s working suits are the perfect example for the totally functional clothing. The reasons why it is functional is because there is no fashion at all in that suites, It is a comfortable clothing designed with just two pockets to put tools in it. It has a plain colour and a smooth cloth to not confuse with anything. Even that homogeneous colour is functional. It was changed from white to light blue to prevent confusions. When you stare for a long time at a warm colour (blood) and then look to white, you will still see the red, but it won't happen with a cold color like blue, so they changed it.
Gatones : It is an Spanish brand, which has been specifically invented to protect the baby and the clothing he's wearing while they crowl freely through everywhere. This is possible due to a very high resistant cloth and an extra-protection on the knees. This is also very functional as it can be worn on summer, on winter, on a park or at the field, and it is very easy to put it and take it out.
This type of clothing, is merely functional as it is not even used to dress the baby, just protect him.

Camouflage : I could talk about the clothing such as coats, jackets, shirts, trousers, which are also functional, or I could talk just about the patterns.
The camouflage patterns are meant to be used to distract, to invisivilize or to confuse animals or people about the location of a person in one place. There are so many different camouflage patterns for any type of location, that it is impossible to get caught wherever you are, if you cover yourself the right way.
This are some of the different patterns :

But it is not just about the patterns. As I said before there are also many different types of camouflage suites, and they also depend on the place you are to chose the correct uniform, because every detail is taken into account for this type of suits.
These suits have been studied all along history and these are the results of it. They are all amazing.

FASHION
When clothing trespasses the functional border, it is directly selected as fashion.
Fashion is a popular, or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration or behaviour. Decoration includes all type of accessories such as gloves, sunglasses, caps, collars, shoes... Some of these are totally iconic points for the personal look of people. For example Bad Bunny can be recognised just by his hair or Michael Jackson for his gloves.
Sometimes, something functional transforms into fashion and it becomes an icon to some people and camouflage is the perfect example for a completely functional clothing, which has transformed completely into fashion and become an icon. A very good example is Rihanna, she has taken the camouflage theme to a very high point and now they are very related.
Nowadays you can go to the street and for sure, there will be someone wearing a jacket, a t-shirt or some trousers with the camouflage pattern.
Other interesting fact is that this camouflage fashion has not occupied just a little target of people, it has expanded so much that it can be seen everywhere on clothing, it doesn't matter if it is high class or low class.
Camouflage has covered a huge range of clothes as t-shirts, leggings, jackets, tuxedos, swimsuits, trousers, suits, ties, shoes, glasses, caps, gloves and even underwear.
This are some examples of this variety.

5 day - Today I am bringing one yellow t-shirt from home to the college and see what I'm drawing on it or how I'll decorate it. Then take ideas and see how can I continue.
Today, I am also stopping the counting of the days because it has no sense. I am writing and uploading things in other day's spaces.
I also prefer ordering the project as convenient for the information and not separating it in days. For example the drawings I will explain below were drawn a few days before but I think it's better to explain them all together.
I also prefer ordering the project as convenient for the information and not separating it in days. For example the drawings I will explain below were drawn a few days before but I think it's better to explain them all together.
This drawing was my first drawing of a sweater.
I did this drawing at the start of the project and I have been drawing different clothing since I started the project, but I think it's better to show them all together on a line-down, showing the evolution I have had over these. The sweater does look with a very long proportions, but it is like this. It covers more than normal and I liked it so much when I saw it. Unless I changed the name in the sweater, the brand is Great Times. This was a very quick drawing, I did it in 5 minutes. It is very few time considering I rubbed all the drawing out several times. I like the drawing in general, obviously there are some parts from it I don't like as most of the creases in the sleeves, but I will improve that. What I like the most are the shadows in it because it gives the drawing many depth. |
This is the second sweater I draw and the one I like the least. The shape of the sweater looks very strange, it is very wide, with a huge shoulders and, as I have drawn it with a pen, I couldn't give it the depth as the previous one so it looks completely 2D.
It does look also very strange because it has too much grey space in the middle, but the reason is that I removed the adidas word out of it, which was much better, but I didn't want to give all the importance to the logo. It is also very strange because of the proportions. This was a continuous line drawing with a pen so it was impossible to correct anything and stop a bit to take a look and continue. That is why it looks much worse than the other ones, but it was very difficult. |
This was the third sweater I draw. In this drawing I traced it because it was supposed to be just a pattern or a model, to later on copy it and make different models. But I realised when I did the first copy that it was too difficult so I left it.
I obviously like this drawing as it has the perfect proportions of a sweater, and a very realistic shadows. |
Here is the copy of the model I drew above. I am now going to explain how I achieved the final drawing, which is quite good in my opinion.
This is the result of the first copy.
The steps I followed to achieve it were : 1 - Trace the same drawing of the model 2 - Cut the borders off to get the silhouette. 3 - Spray paint all the paper except the neck part. 4 - Wait until it dries ( outside ). 5 - Give it another spray paint layer. 6 - Wait again till it dries. 7 - Draw all the outline, creases and neck part with a permanent black marker. 8 - I draw the red line which goes from top to bottom with a brush because I was going to draw something different, I later changed the idea. 9 - Draw the logo on the centre of the sweatshirt. 10 - Finally I bent the paper in some parts to give it more depth. |

This is the first t-shirt I printed. I think it is really good, because of the precision, the definition, and the contrast it has. Something that helps to give more contrast are the defined and straight lines, not as the first one. I think this t-shirt looks great and even more if I compare it with the first one.
There is also one negative point which is the ink. I didn't really asked which was the best ink for this, and now I can say I should have asked. This ink is Ink and it lasts a lot of time till it dries. |
After this I thought it had no sense to put my logo in the t-shirt so I started making a

Today we go to the Manchester Gallery and take photographs of it unless I don't find any close similarities to my current work. So when we exit the museum I started taking lots of primary research about camouflage in modern fashion, by taking many photos of different people wearing that custom either on the shoes or the jacket.
This are some of the photos I took. I have separated them into two groups. The ones people was wearing on the street, and the ones taken in the shops.
I can say I took a great amount of photos about it because it was really easy, lots of people are wearing camouflage and it it is a very easy thing to see and identify between the crowd. These are just some of the huge amount of photos I did, but most of them were really blurred as I had to turn my camera very fast to shoot them in the middle of everybody so many of them were moved and blurred.
One thing I have observed is that unless there's camo patterns in all type of accessories, people prefer it onto coats, jackets, sweatshirts and raincoats.

Shops right now are completely filled up with camouflage everywhere, and that means it is the modern fashion right now.

After this, I thought I needed to make my own camouflage pattern so I started thinking about it and making different types of camouflage. Next day I went to Manchester centre again trying to capture any view for any possible pattern.
I also reached the conclussion that I needed to make a camo pattern for the city. Taking different urban points such as landscapes, buildings, trees, bridges...I think it is a very good idea that I can develop and create. I t is something new, creative and different.

WHITWORTH GALLERY TRIP.
We went to the Whitworth Gallery the 16th of January to see carefully how is the proffesional work exposed, the framing, the order of the exhibition.
We all needed to chose one of our favourite pieces in in the exhibition, comment about it, fill a sheet with all its information and take loads of photos.
